Why email attacks should be your number one security concern

Businesses face a huge increase in e-mail attacks as hackers take a more direct route to seeking big rewards.

New research by Mimecast has revealed that millions of cyber attacks use the modest email as a weapon of their choice.

Specifically, the company noted a surge in Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks in which hackers fraudulently misrepresent other people in a company to trick victims into sending personal information or resources.

Mimecast's most recent quarterly report showed a 269 percent increase in BEC attacks compared to the last three months, reflecting the massive increase in such attacks.

However, BEC attacks are not the only method that cybercriminals have successfully used on target organizations. Mimecast's results collected 28,783,892 spam emails, 28,808 malware attachments, and 28,726 types of malicious files that were overlooked by current security protection tools and sent to users' inboxes during the quarter.

This corresponded to a false negative rate of 11 percent of the emails examined, highlighting the urgent need for businesses to improve their email security right away.

"The real problem is that there are tens of thousands of email-borne threats that can bypass corporate e-mail security systems, make them more vulnerable, and put their employees under considerable pressure, maliciously Recognize emails, "said Dr. Joshua Douglas, vice president of threat intelligence at Mimecast.

"Cybercriminals are always looking for new ways to circumvent traditional defenses and deceive users. This means that the industry needs to focus its efforts on R & D investment, unified integration, and facilitating user participation in security measures to increase resilience to evolving attacks.
