The game between PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett just got interesting when Sony finally released a launch date for the PlayStation 5 console – the same Holiday 2020 window as Microsoft's Xbox Project Scarlett.
The upcoming console launches pose major challenges for both manufacturers, with Sony's lead in the current console war-up gaining as new, high-performance hardware hits the market. But can the Xbox Scarlett take over and what will the new consoles actually do differently than the older Xbox One and PS4?

Xbox Project Scarlett vs PS5: specifications so far
Although Sony took the first step in April 2019 and presented the first specific details on its PS5, the Microsoft showcase for the E3 2019 showed that both companies seem to be singing on the same hymn sheet with the internal specifications of their new machines. Note, however, that it has never been revealed what their consoles look like – this is just a quick look under the hood at this point.
The PlayStation 5 will feature a bespoke version of the third generation AMD Ryzen chipset packaged in 8 cores with the company's new Zen 2 architecture and navigation graphics. It's a system that can support ray tracing – a power-intensive lighting technology previously reserved for expensive, high-end PC GPUs that we now know to be "built into the GPU hardware" for the PS5.
Sony has also said that the console is setting a new "gold standard" for immersive 3D audio, especially for those who use a headset while playing games.
The PS5 also supports screen resolutions up to 8K – much higher than the standard 1080p HD resolution on most TVs, let alone the increasingly popular 4K. It also works with refresh rates of 120 Hz, allowing for smooth movement in games. These are incredibly powerful specifications so we would not expect a game to meet these standards on a regular basis (let alone an expensive TV that supports them), but it's good to see what Sony is aiming for.
Perhaps the most interesting element of the Sony build is its commitment to using SSD storage. The solid state drive in the PlayStation 5 will again be custom hardware, and Sony has already demonstrated its technical abilities with a demo of its existing Spider-Man PS4 game. On PS5 hardware, the game can race at incredibly high speeds through an incredibly detailed New York City, with no delay loading geometries or texturing textures, which would never be possible on PS4.
There are also some new tidbits on the next DualShock controller – although there is currently no official & # 39; DualShock 5 & # 39; branding. A PlayStation blog post states that the haptic feedback technology would replace the latest "rumble" features, while "adaptive triggers" will be able to provide different levels of resistance for different weapon equipment or terrain types that you may have in the game navigate, restore.

Again, it uses custom AMD internals that use the same Zen2 and navi architecture as PS5. This is four times more powerful than the Xbox One X – the most technically impressive gaming hardware of this generation.

The Xbox Project Scarlett will keep up with the PS5 with ray-tracing capabilities, and will also include an SSD, which will also be used as virtual RAM to increase load times 40 times. The Xbox Two is also backwards compatible with the supporting hardware accessories of the Xbox One. So you do not have to buy new pads and headsets to accompany the console on startup. It's worth noting that rumors surrounding Scarlett's Xbox project also included the ability to launch two free consoles codenamed Anaconda and Lockheart. The theory here is that the first computer will be a high-end computer, probably the one described above, while the second is a cost-effective option that focuses on streaming (possibly in the style of the Xbox One S All Digital Edition). At the present time, however, they remain only rumors, as Microsoft still has to confirm or deny the existence of a duo.
Xbox Project Scarlett vs. PS5: Games we expect
It's early doors for the new Next Gen consoles, but we're already getting a glimpse of the experiences you can expect on the Xbox Project Scarlett and the PS5.
Let's start with the Xbox, because Microsoft was a bit more open with its lineup. First, Microsoft has confirmed this Halo infiniteHalo 6 will be a startup title for Xbox Project Scarlett. The Halo franchise is a unit shifter for Microsoft, a high budget FPS series that has been hanging on a small rock for five years when "Holiday 2020" Halo Infinite is released. At this point, it is an exercise in speculation to talk about the price of Xbox Project Scarlett or the cost of PS5. It's just too early to say, and too many factors are missing to make an informed decision on the details of their final price.
What we can say with certainty, however, is that the above specifications are not cheap. These will be high-end machines to start, and as a result, significant price tags will be added.
What we can do, however, is a review of the comparable prices of Xbox One and PS4 at launch. One of the reasons the PS4 proved to be the most popular console in this generation was the fact that it was launched at a more attractive price of $ 399.99 / £ 349.99. This was a relative bargain price compared to the $ 499 / £ 429 Xbox One, which had to take into account the cost of the unfortunate (and relatively short-lived) Kinect motion tracker. There is still so much to learn about PS5 and Xbox Two or Project Scarlett (or whatever it's called). But at this early stage, the similarities between the two consoles are striking.
The commitment to SSD technology suggests that third-party developers can work equally on both consoles. Both consoles will make great efforts to ensure full backward compatibility in their archives. And the amazing fact that they will share streaming technologies is the kind of collaboration that used to be unknown. Microsoft and Sony have clearly listened to their fan bases – people are not interested in corporate politics, they just want the best possible gaming experience.
But there is still a tribalism among the fans, so the content of first-party games may still be more important than ever. With so many ways to play, from remote access to streaming, hardware becomes far less important than the experience offered – especially when the two platforms are increasingly similar. Microsoft is the first company to announce a platform-exclusive title with Halo, but Sony has completely destroyed the competition of the PS4 generation with its exclusive titles. Hope and expect that nothing less will happen in the coming console wars.
