MSI announced a new gaming notebook with the Alpha 15. Not surprisingly, a company is constantly bringing new products to market, but this new notebook has doubled AMD hardware and introduced the first generation of AMD Navi graphics cards for laptops.
The MSI Alpha 15 is equipped with the right gaming laptop hardware. It can run up to an AMD Ryzen 7 3750H processor (CPU) for high performance and uses the new AMD Radeon RX 5500M graphics processor (GPU) with 4GB of GDDR6 VRAM. It comes with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM. It accommodates a 2.5-inch hard drive and a PCIe or SATA-based M.2 solid-state drive (SSD).
The Alpha 15 completes the gaming experience with a keyboard that features SteelSeries RGB lighting per button and a Full HD (1080p) display. MSI will offer both 120 Hz and 144 Hz displays and both include AMD Radeon FreeSync technology.
A new leaf for AMD
AMD launched the Radeon RX 5700 and 5700XT earlier this year with impressively low prices compared to Nvidia's mid-tier offerings. These GPUs are based on a 7nm process called Navi, which gives them good performance and efficiency over their predecessors.
Now we finally see that AMD's Navi GPUs appear in the mobile space, as they were previously only available as desktop graphics cards.
The RX 5500M is a smaller than the desktop RX 5700. It contains 22 computer units compared to the RX 5700 36, although it seems to have similar clock frequencies.
If this option moves into the mobile space, AMD could achieve another important market uptake over its competitors Nvidia and Intel. We've already seen major advances in AMD's desktop products, and a valuable shot has been found in Microsoft's 15-inch Surface Laptop 3. New mobile graphics hardware completes AMD's competitiveness in the laptop space. Now AMD only needs to launch Zen 2 Mobile CPUs.
