Google makes it easy for developers to publish an open source version of the differential privacy library that runs some of its own products.
Developers can now use this library to build their own tools that can use aggregated data without fear of revealing personally identifiable information.
In a blog post announcing the new open source privacy privacy library, Google gives an example of how a health care professional wants to compare the average length of stay of patients in different hospitals to see if there are any differences in care. Before, it would be difficult to compromise the privacy of affected patients.
Miguel Guevara, Product Manager of the Google Privacy and Privacy Office, gave more information on how developers, businesses and governments can use the differential privacy library to gain deeper insights into data.
"Whether you're a city planner, a small business owner or a software developer, gaining useful insights from data can help make services work better and answer important questions. Without strict privacy, however, you risk losing the trust of your citizens, customers and users. Differential private data analysis is a principled approach that enables companies to learn from most of their data while ensuring that a person's data can not be distinguished or re-identified. This type of analysis can be done in a variety of ways and for many different purposes. "
Differential Privacy Library
According to Google, the current version of the Apache licensed C ++ privacy protection library focuses on enabling developers to access features that are difficult to create from scratch. The library also includes many standard statistical functions such as number, sum, mean, variance, and so on, that developers need to better analyze their data.
The library itself even includes an additional library that developers can use for "rigorous testing," along with a PostgreSQL extension and multiple recipes to get started.
With the introduction of the GDPR and other data protection regulations, working with personal data has become more difficult for companies because they can now be held accountable for any data breach or data leakage. Google has now provided developers with a useful tool that they can use to create tools that can analyze personal information without compromising the privacy of the users they work with.
